Should I go see a doctor for bloody stools?

Ever since I was in middle school, I have had occasional bloody stools when using the bathroom. I am now 16 years old and it still happens to me. I know I have hemorrhoids and I often get constipated… but could it be something more? The blood on the stools are usually red, but not bright red. Should I go see a doctor? If so, what type of doctor should I see? I have no experience in making appointments with doctors since I rarely ever go see the doctor…I’m really afraid that I may have cancer.

Don’t panic. Sounds like hemorroids that are just getting worse. Go to your regular g.p. first, and let them refer you if you need a gastroenterologist, if they think you need it. In the meantime, go to the pharmacy and ask for a a stool softener (this is not a laxative, it simply “moisturizes” your stool, making them easier to pass.) When you get to your g.p., you may also want to ask him to check you for pin worms or other parasites. These can cause bloody stools and intense itching. And use moistened tissues to wipe with, or some of those Prepartion H wipes. These are basically like baby wipes moistened with witch hazel rather than water.
