What Is Hemorrhoid
Hemorrhoids are a painful condition caused by swollen veins in the anus and rectum, and can often cause bleeding. Nine out of ten people living in the United States will get hemorrhoids at some time in their lives; five out of ten people develop them sometime before their fiftieth birthday. While anyone can get hemorrhoids, they are more common during middle age, in pregnant women, in those who are obese, in people who have frequent diarrhea, and in people who are often constipated.
Numerous explanations have been offered to account for the development of hemorrhoids, such as hard stool, pregnancy, labor, violent exercise and others. Factors contributing to them are: pregnancy, heredity, aging, and chronic constipation or diarrhea. Some people develop the symptoms of hemorrhoids because they have to sit for many hours at their job, or because they spend too much time watching television or playing games on their computers. Others develop the symptoms because they do not eat or exercise properly.
Hemorrhoids are annoying, uncomfortable, and often embarrassing, but never serious. In some cases they can lead to rectal cancer and therefore they require proper examination and treatment by a physician. Hemorrhoids may occur inside the anus (internal) or under the skin around the anus (external). They are classified into four degrees, depending on severity, so that they can more easily be evaluated for possible surgery.
Hemorrhoid Symptoms
The symptoms of hemorrhoids could develop because of poor diet which brings on constipation. Some of the symptoms are: bright red blood covering the stool painful swelling around the anus a hard lump around the anus, anal fissures, anal fistulae, anal abscesses, anal irritation and itching.
Hemorrhoid Treatment
Medical treatment of hemorrhoids initially is aimed at relieving symptoms. Symptoms can be reduced by: sitting in a warm tub, Ice packs (to help reduce swelling), usage of a hemorrhoid cream, and the use of fiber supplements to reduce voiding strain. In some cases, hemorrhoids must be treated surgically. Internal hemorrhoids can also be injected with a chemical that will cause them to shrink, or destroyed with infrared light, a laser, an electrical current, or freezing with liquid nitrogen (cryosurgery). A hemorrhoidectomy is performed when hemorrhoids are severe and other treatments are not effective.
There are two treatment goals: first, take away the symptoms (burning, pain, and itching) and second, shrink the hemorrhoids. To shrink your hemorrhoids back down to normal size, topical medications are again useful.
A common misconception about hemorrhoids treatment is that it must be an external application (such as a cream) to be effective. Some studies have shown that diosmin can be quite effective in treating hemorrhoids when taken orally, either as a sole treatment plan, or in conjunction with another type of hemorrhoid treatment like rubber band ligation or surgery.
Lumps: Sensitive lumps around the anus are also an obvious symptom that you have external hemorrhoid. All you need to do is soak in warm water for approximately 10 minutes or so to relieve the swelling and pain of hemorrhoids.
Wipes: Wiping with toilet paper that is dry may irritate external hemorrhoids. Wiping the area with scented toilet paper can severely agitate hemorrhoids, even if you’re using the most expensive brand. Instead, stick with the plain stuff, with no chemical additives. And for severe external hemorrhoids that are difficult to keep clean, wet the toilet paper with water to keep irritation to a minimum. Make things even more soothing by moistening the paper with witch hazel.
Ice Packs: Ice packs are a temporary treatment that can also be used to relieve some of pain and swelling caused by external hemorrhoids.
Applying Hemorrhoid Cream: Creams that treat external hemorrhoids should be available at any pharmacy. Almost any cream containing witch hazel will work and help reduce the swelling, itching and pain of the hemorrhoid lump. Fortunately, good habits and simple medical treatment usually control hemorrhoids well, and surgery is only recommended in unusually severe cases.
Alternative therapies, like homeopathy, are gaining popularity today as treatment possibilities for all sorts of problems, including hemorrhoids. There are many testimonials on various websites of people who have tried many other different types of possible solutions to their hemorrhoids and have found that many of them just didn’t work for them until they visited this website and learned about hemorrhoids.
Hemorrhoid pillows
Hemorrhoid pillows, firm pillows shaped like a donut, are ideal for relief of pregnancy discomfort, hemorrhoid pain, hip bursitis, prostate inflammation, and other problems caused from long term sitting or driving. Those suffering from tailbone pain, rectal pain and or hemorrhoids appreciate the soft molded foam that donut pillow provides. This coccyx cushion helps to evenly distribute weight when you are seated, so if you have a fractured coccyx or tailbone, hemorrhoids or anal pain, you will be able to sit more comfortably and safely.
There are all kinds of shapes and sizes in hemorrhoids cushions and pillows. Many of them are made from inflatable rubber, but there are also versions of hemorrhoids cushions made from soft foam, or plastic covers filled with soft foam pieces or gels.
Many hemorrhoids pillows are ring shaped, but there are also rectangular and square pillows on the market. Whatever the overall design, though, all these have one thing in common, which is the hole in the centre. Even rectangular hemorrhoids cushions will have some kind of central gap, even if it’s covered over with fabric, and it’s this hole that provides the relief.
The purpose of hemorrhoids pillow is to lift your buttocks up from whatever you happen to be sitting on and remove pressure from the area directly around the anus. By giving a raised surface around the rectum, such as by a hemorrhoids pillow, the pressure that would be absorbed directly through the hemorrhoids is transferred safely away, and with it, some of the discomfort.
Using a hemorrhoids pillow couldn’t really be simpler then – you just place it on top of whatever you’d normally be sitting on, and then sit on the pillow instead. And it work fast – as soon as you’ve sat down, this hemorrhoids treatment is working. There’s no need to wait until it kicks in like a painkiller.
Hemorrhoids pillows certainly aren’t a cure, although they may help you bear the pain while you’re waiting for one. There may be research studies underway, but if it isn’t something that matters a great deal one way or the other, chances are nobody will be undertaking extensive surveys as to the good, inflatable or otherwise hemorrhoids cushions may or may not do. Just remember that the hemorrhoids pillows are there to help make sitting down more bearable when you’re suffering and when you still need to sit.
Hemorrhoid pillows aren’t there to cure the hemorrhoid problem, you still need to look at what is causing the hemorrhoids in the first place and then work on that, possibly in conjunction with your local doctor. As with all safe treatments that offer relief, the best advice is to try them and see if they work for you. You can prevent hemorrhoids by eating a diet high in fiber, drinking plenty of fluids, maintaining good bowel habits and softer stools, and maintaining an active lifestyle should be your highest priority.
